From the Leelanau Conservancy’s Invitation: ‘Formed in 2022, the LC Collective is a group of young people passionate about the Leelanau Conservancy and the county. As part of the Leelanau Conservancy, the LC Collective aims to create inclusive opportunities to recreate, participate, and activate in Leelanau’s natural spaces. Join us for a special celebration of local art and music to thank the harvest moon and the season we are so grateful for here in Leelanau. The show highlights aspects of this area’s connection to the cycles of land, water, and the seasons. As our region has been one that draws creatives of every kind, the LC Collective hopes this event gives a taste of what our up-and-coming artists and musicians have to offer. Curated by Alyssa Smith (@smithalyssaann) with support from @boardmanreview, a portion of all art sales will benefit the Leelanau Conservancy.’

Participating Artists: Amanda Acker, Nik Burkhart, Katherine Corden, Rebecca Deneau, James Morse, Alyssa Smith, Matt Voight, Rachel Winslow; and Musicians: A.S. Lutes and Allie Kessel

This past Saturday our local community celebrated the Harvest Moon at an art show hosted at the recently restored DeYoung Natural Area Farm House. Hosted by the Leelanau Conservancy Collective, curated by Alyssa Smith, and supported by the Boardman Review and many other wonderful local businesses. I loved catching up with many of you and was honored to be included. Here are the pieces I showed along with my commentary.

'Last Light' has a double meaning - it is both that moment when the bright sky still lingers after sunset, and what our harvest moon symbolizes as our 'last summer light' before transitioning into autumn. This painting depicts a favorite 'last light' past time - gathering 'round a beach bonfire - a ritual this time of year that both honors our summer and welcomes the anticipated season of gathering to come.

'Moon Shadows' celebrates the moonlit ritual of skinny dipping at the end of summer when the lake is warmest. Though the moon isn't literally seen in the painting, this color study of a moonlit scene makes the argument that She's the main subject.
